This lets in light, air and water at the same time as providing vital insulation. Keep spares in pots under glass or wrapped in fleece for the winter until hardiness is proven. Mulch hardy deciduous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenersworld.com\/how-to\/grow-plants\/how-to-grow-agapanthus\/\">agapanthus <\/a>planted in borders.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Banana<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/10\/2018\/02\/68baa710-7c00-40bd-8a2e-5b0ae73b8a1f-fe2c5a2.jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" alt=\"Banana planted in grasses\" title=\"Banana and grasses\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In milder areas, the hardier banana, <em>Musa basjoo<\/em>, can withstand winter, especially with a mulch spread over the roots and a thatch of straw to protect the crown. A 10cm duvet of mulch helps insulate against frost. In colder areas, lift plants in autumn, pot up and keep frost-free and barely watered until spring. Harden off before planting out in late May.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Cordyline<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/10\/2018\/02\/b456a21a-c9a4-4be9-99f8-978d41be7d2b-7254804.jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" alt=\"63887\" title=\"63887\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Plain green-leaved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenersworld.com\/search\/plants\/?q=cordyline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cabbage palms<\/a> and those with cream variegations tend to be tougher than those with striped or red-tinted leaves. Tie the leaves in an upright bunch, then protect with fleece or hessian strips.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Echium pininana<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/10\/2018\/02\/ba655d1c-be9f-4222-ab16-4c243b4dd65e-7254804.jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" alt=\"63888\" title=\"63888\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These exotic natives of Madeira and the Canary Islands must reach a good size to flower. Your best bet is to plant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenersworld.com\/search\/?q=echium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">echiums<\/a> in a sheltered spot and wrap them with a double layer of fleece for the winter, giving them a chance to bloom the following season.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Melianthus major<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/10\/2016\/07\/LI3270538-dry-soil-melianthus-2048-1365-167cfdd.jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" alt=\"Melianthus major\" title=\"LI3270538-dry-soil-melianthus-2048-1365\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardenersworld.com\/plants\/melianthus-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">honey bush<\/a> is mainly grown for its exotic blue-green foliage. Protected plants in mild areas sometimes grow large enough to produce spikes of deep reddish-brown flowers. Move small potted plants under glass for the winter (need not be heated). Or, lift undamaged plants from the garden, trim back, pot up and bring in. Move potted plants under glass for winter, or wrap the pots in hessian and move to a sheltered spot.
