I visited Madeira in September, but the month doesn\u2019t really matter if you\u2019re a garden lover because one of the great things about the island is its subtropical climate, which means you\u2019ll see beautiful flowers all year round.<\/p>\n

The native flora is fascinating due to centuries of visitors who have brought in plants from all over the world, leading to Madeira being nicknamed the Garden Isle. Much of my visit revolved around trekking, meaning I was only able to visit the first two gardens on my list personally. I\u2019m happy to report these two were spectacular and I\u2019m reliably informed the last three on my list are well worth seeing too. Perhaps I need a return visit!<\/p>\n

1. Madeira Botanical Garden<\/h3>\n

The Madeira Botanical Garden<\/a> is a treasure-trove for gardeners and is renowned for its stunning carpet bedding display but also home to a carefully curated plant collection, including an outdoor propagation bed of succulents<\/a> and fascinating display of economically important plants. Located high in the hills above Funchal it also boasts spectacular views, which make it a great destination if your travelling companion is less of a plantaholic than you. They can sit in the sun admiring Madeira\u2019s topography while you marvel over the bougainvillea<\/a>, hibiscus<\/a> and bird of paradise<\/a> flowers.<\/p>\n
